Why you ought to keep an eye on those close to you

When starlings are in a murmur, they look only at the seven birds within their immediate range of sight. By doing so they create their seemingly magical flowing shapes with ease. In the tiniest of moments, a message is hurtled throughout the whole flock and together the whole is created.

In what ways does this relate to our work cultures? We look for messages on ‘what it’s like around here’ from those closest to us and spread that message through the different concentric and overlapping little groups we are all part of until the whole is created. There are times when we manage a beautiful and magical flow with each other, and others when we become more dispersed and out of sync.

You are part of many little groups, let's imagine little groups of seven, interlocking and creating the whole. All interacting with each other to read and receive signs on who we are when we're together. We are heavily influenced by those we are closest to, how they speak, act and interact. And, of course this is two way, the way we speak, act and interact impacts the way we all move. We all have the power to change the direction of the flow.

Best to make sure what we say, do and how we interact is in line with the flow we want to be part of, even when what we receive is not.
